Definition |
An acute infectious illness cased by Vibrion Choleragram negative rods-charecterised by rice-water diarrhea, and vomiting, with extreme fluid loss (up to a litre ad hour) electrolyte depletion, severe muscles cramps and prostration. |

Prognosis |
Very good (<1% mortality) with aggressive management of volume status. Untreated cases die of hypo-volaemic shok. |

|
General Measures |
Bed rest until symptoms resolve, and patient feels well enough to take normal diet. |
|
|
Advice to Patient |
Personal hygiene as for any enteral infection. |
|
|
Follow Up |
Not required. |

|
Prevention |
Natural infection confers life-long immunity. Tetracyclineprophylaxis for all contacts. Enteric precautions for personal hygiene, contact and food. Cholera vaccine confers immunity for 3-6 months in 50% of patients, and is given as single dose. |
