Definition |
Widely prevalent topical disease cause y one of 3 filial nematodes W. Bancrofti, B. Malayi, and B. timori (the last one found only in Indonesia.), and transmitted by mosquitoes. Lymphatic filariasis is a chronic disesase with the adult worm living in lymphatic vessels and glands and microfilariae that are blood dwelling living for up to 12 months.

Prognosis |
Good in the early case including in those with lympoedema, cyluria, or a small hydrocoele, but in advanced infection the prognosis is poor. Psychological impact on those with limb and scrotal deformities enormous.

General Measures |
Bed rest, antibiotics for secondary infections, elastic stockings and pressure bandages for limb oedema, prevention of secondary infection. Suspensory bandage for orchitits and epididymitis. No satisfactory therapy for chyluria.

Prevention |
Common salt medicated with DEC (1-4 gms added to 1 KG of common salt.) DEC given 6 mg/kg body weight co administered with a single dose of Ivermectin (400ug/kg) every 6 months, in endemic areas.
