Common complaint arising from objective (or rarely subjective) presence of excess amount of gas in the gastrointestinal tract.

   
Prognosis

Good except in cases of severe malabsorption calling for constant therapy.

   
General Measures

Avoidance of foods known to increase intestinal gas production, like fibre, corn, beans, potatoes, wheat, cauliflower, cabbage, onions, beer and eggs.

Lactose-free diet for those known to be lactose intolerant or use of lactase treated milk.

Avoidance of excess water ingestion (more than a glass), during meals. Not to lie down for an hour after meals.

Eating food slowly, and with proper mastication.

Gentle abdominal flexion exercises. Daily walks or cycling.

Avoidance of carbonate drinks.

   
Advice to Patient

Avoid indiscriminate of Digestive enzymes without proof of their deficiency.

Avoid ill advised use of antacids for all symptoms relating to ‘gas’.
