Definition |
A variety of inflammatory disorders of thyroid that can cause hyper or hypothyroidism, or resolve completely |

Prognosis |
Hashimoto’s has an excellent prognosis with most patients recovering their thyroid function. A few might get hypothyroid after a long period of time. Whereas the subacute form tends to have exacerbations and remissions. Suppurative thyroiditis recovers fully on therapy. Riedel’s thyroiditis leads to hypothyroidism when the entire thyroid gets fibrous. |

Follow Up |
Thyroid function to be checked every 6 months in Hashimoto’s thyroiditis to detect evolving hypothyroid state, and every 4 weeks in subacute type until euthyroid state is restored. |
